Driver Education Scholarships
Applications for Kyle Sizemore Memorial Fund driver education scholarships are available in high school Counseling Offices and this website. Please plan ahead. We review applications received by the 15th of the month as a group and notify recipients prior to the end of the month. This makes the funding available for courses starting the next month.

2006 Highlights
The family of Kyle Sizemore established a fund with North Kitsap Education Foundation in 2006 to provide scholarships for students to enroll in drivers’ education programs and to sponsor driving safety programs for North Kitsap students. Driver training courses generally cost more than $300 and many students who cannot afford the cost wait until they are 18 years old to get their drivers’ license. The scholarships may be used at private driver education schools or the District-sponsored program.

Kyle was in his junior year at North Kitsap High in the spring of 2005. He was a quiet young man who loved playing baseball, playing guitar, and being with his friends. He was a very independent kid with many dreams for the future including furthering his education, continuing in baseball, building guitars, being a musician, having a great career, getting married someday and having lots of kids. He was a very fair minded young man who believed that every person should have an equal opportunity to achieve his or her dreams.
To Kyle’s friends and family he was a very special and loved person with a smile that could light up the darkest night. We were extremely proud of him. To others he could just be a typical kid going through his teenage years, trying to deal with the pressures that go along with growing into adulthood.
Kyle’s dreams were ended on March 8th, 2005 when he was critically injured in a car crash caused by an 18 year old driver who was under the influence of alcohol and drugs, had not taken a driver training class, and did not have a driver’s license or insurance. Kyle passed away on March 14th at Harborview hospital. He was 17 years old.
Another North Kitsap student, Josh Morton, was also severely injured in the crash and survived, although his injuries will cause him pain for the rest of his life. The driver was charged with felony vehicular homicide and vehicular assault and sentenced to prison. This avoidable tragedy not only took the life of one young man and sent one to prison, but has had a tremendous impact on all of the persons involved in the crash, their families and hundreds of friends.
Three days after the crash Kyle missed his appointment at the DOL to take his driving test. He had completed the drivers’ education course at North Kitsap High. One of the first things he wanted to do as a licensed driver was to find a good job to help pave the way to realize his dreams. While Kyle was learning to drive he became very aware that driving is one of the most dangerous things we do and, being responsible and obeying the laws of the road are paramount to the safety of all. At one time he made the statement that every person who drives a car should take a drivers training course. He was concerned that some of his friends were not able to afford the cost of a drivers training course and would someday be drivers without good instruction. We are grateful that Kyle’s grandparents were able to help us pay for Kyle’s drivers’ education.
I try to stay away from the "whys" and the "what ifs". There is nothing we can do about the past, except to learn. It is our greatest hope that this fund will help others to learn and will possibly prevent the terrible choices that were made that led to the crash that killed our son, injured forever another young man, and put a young man in prison.
In memory of our son who believed that every person should have equal opportunity to realize their dreams, and in an effort to encourage good decisions through education, we have established this fund.
